BMC Global and Public Health is an open access, transparent peer review journal publishing outstanding and influential research and opinion of broad interest to all professional communities involved in global and public health research, policy-making, implementation and delivery worldwide. We are dedicated to supporting our authors by providing global visibility, innovative formats, widespread promotion, and opportunities for impact on future research, practice, and policy.

Our publishing process: Our responsive team of professional editors provide excellent service by ensuring rigorous manuscript processing and communication to authors throughout the entire publishing experience. Upon submission, our in-house editors work with carefully selected reviewers and where necessary our Editorial Board of leading international experts to ensure a high quality and constructive editorial and peer review process.

High visibility and global reach: All content such as high-impact research, reviews and opinion is freely available open access immediately upon publication. Papers that are published in BMC Global and Public Health are featured on our website with article-level metrics. Selected articles are promoted via press coverage, marketing campaigns, and social media.

Flexible formatting: To facilitate the submission process, we are flexible with regard to the format, style and length of initial submissions. Journal-specific formatting is required only once manuscripts reach the later stages of the publication process.

Portable peer review: To reduce time spent on serial submissions and iterative reviewing, BMC Global and Public Health offers to consider manuscripts on the basis of reviews received at other journals. We also support transfers of reviews obtained at BMC Global and Public Health to other journals, including those outside of BMC and Springer Nature. Learn more from our peer review policy page.

Scoop protection: BMC Global and Public Health offers "scoop protection", meaning that if other researchers publish similar findings after submission, or post them on a preprint server, this will not be a reason for rejection. However, the submission can still be rejected on other grounds.

Aims and scope

BMC Global and Public Health publishes impactful research, key advances and expert opinion in all areas of global and public health. The journal aims to promote health and well-being, to advance health equity and policy making, and to connect and support the global and public health communities around the world. Areas of interest of the journal include disease epidemiology, population health, health equity, environmental and occupational health, health policy, reproductive, maternal and child health, oral health, mental health and social determinants of health. In order to engage the communities in open discussion, the journal publishes a unique set of high-impact content including Research, Systematic Reviews, Registered Reports, as well as Reviews, Comments, Forums, Perspectives and Matters Arising.

All articles published by BMC Global and Public Health are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers. Further information about open access can be found here.

As authors of articles published in BMC Global and Public Health you are the copyright holders of your article and have granted to any third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use, reproduce or disseminate your article, according to the BMC license agreement.

Article processing charges (APC)

Authors who publish open access in BMC Global and Public Health are required to pay an article processing charge (APC). The APC price will be determined from the date on which the article is accepted for publication.

We are working closely with relevant indexing services including PubMed Central and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics) to ensure that articles published in BMC Global and Public Health will be available in their databases when appropriate.

Peer-review policy

Peer review is the system used to assess the quality of a manuscript before it is published. Independent researchers in the relevant research area assess submitted manuscripts for originality, validity and significance to help Editors determine whether the manuscript should be published in their journal. BMC Global and Public Health operates a transparent peer-review system, where, if the article is published, the reviewer reports are published online alongside the article under a Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0, but the reviewer is not named. The benefit of transparent peer review is that it increases transparency. In addition, published review reports can serve an educational purpose in helping facilitate training and research into peer review.

Manuscripts submitted to BMC Global and Public Health are assessed by our experienced in-house Editorial team who make all decisions based on extensive and rigorous peer review by academic experts who specialize in the manuscript topic. Editorial Board Members may provide advice on manuscripts submitted to the journal. Decisions may be made in consultation with Editorial Board Members but final editorial decisions lie with the Chief Editor.

Manuscript transfers

A submitted manuscript might not meet the expectations for publication at BMC Global and Public Health, but could be well-suited for another journal within the Springer Nature portfolio. To help authors publish their work quickly, we offer a transfer service between our journals.

Please note that if a manuscript you reviewed at BMC Global and Public Health is transferred by the authors to another journal within Springer Nature, your identity and report will also be transferred for full assessment by the in-house Editorial team. If you are asked to review a revised version of the previously reviewed manuscript post-transfer, we ask that you aim to adapt your expectations to the standards of the receiving journal in relation to perceived significance and interest.

Portable peer review policy

To improve the efficiency of peer review, we are open to considering manuscripts on the basis of reviews received at other journals, including those outside of Springer Nature. Authors wishing to transfer papers with reviews to BMC Global and Public Health should email us at bmcglobalpublichealth@biomedcentral.com to enquire about the suitability of the manuscript, and provide the previous journal’s identity and all reviews, alongside a point-by-point response to the reviewers’ comments. We typically ask the previous journal to share with us the reviews and reviewers’ identities, and - subject to agreement from all parties - original reviewers may be consulted if deemed appropriate. We aim to expedite the decision-making process in these cases, but reserve the right to seek additional advice from experts when needed.

We are also happy to facilitate transfers to journals within and outside Springer Nature by sharing reviews and reviewers’ identities at the authors’ request. Authors can request that reviews are passed on, and inform the receiving journal’s Editors that they can contact us for further information.

Please note that sharing of reviews and reviewers’ identities is subject to reviewers’ approval.

Editorial policies

Citing articles in BMC Global and Public Health

Articles in BMC Global and Public Health should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. Because articles are not printed, they do not have page numbers; instead, they are given a unique article number.
